Kwan Jang Nim Mike Bogdanski (U.S.G. senior advisor) promoted Master Kristin Duethorn (2013 Vice chair) to Fifth Dan and James "Griz" Gendron to 4th Dan at a promotion ceremony in November at Quest Martial Arts in Putnam, CT. Master Duethorn is also the co-owner of Quest.
On May 22nd 2012, Grandmaster Nam In Do visited Quest Martial Arts in Putnam, CT. Grandmaster Nam is from Taegu City, one of the places visited during the USGTSDA's 2010 Founding Fathers Tour of Korea. Even though we met him in Korea and watched the unbelievable demonstration team performances by his students, it was not our connection that brought him to rural Connecticut. He was here conducting seminars on how to live to be healthy at 100 at a local Korean cultural center. As a result of his visit to Northeast Connecticut, he was able to visit our Dojang just as we visited his in Taegu City. It is a big world, but our membership in the USGTSDA not only made it smaller, but more connected through our shared study of Tang Soo Do. Grandmaster Nam taught a Neh Gong clinic that included physical exercises/warm ups for keeping the body healthy for years of martial arts training. The majority of his seminar focused on breathing to support the internal functions of the body. Quest Martial Arts provided this seminar to its black belts as part of their advanced training in Tang Soo Do. Earlier in the visit, adult students of all rank performed forms demonstrations. Our advanced black belts were commended by Grandmaster Nam for their presentation of Lo Hai. We also had the opportunity to speak to Grandmaster Nam about the current history and connection between the government of Korea and Tang Soo Do. We are fortunate as martial artist to have connections that allow us to grow through new knowledge, and through expanding the depth and breath of our training.
Tribury Karate & Fitness, formerly Southbury Academy of Karate, has changed ownership and subsequently their name. The martial arts and fitness center located at 1432 Old Waterbury Road in Southbury changed their name to Tribury Karate & Fitness to reflect their mission to serve the residents of Southbury and surrounding communities. “Our students come from many of Southbury’s surrounding communities, so the name change was not only timely but appropriate”, states owner Master Garth Charland. Kwan Jang Nim Mike Bogdanski, a fourty plus year veteran of martial arts and business partner Master Kristin Duethorn are making some changes in their martial arts school. Mike Bogdanski’s martial arts center, located in Putnam CT, has been operating for over twenty years teaching self defense and life skills. Bogdanski, a seventh degree Black Belt with a Masters degree in school counseling and a Bachelors degree in psychology has trained Kristin Duethorn to the rank of Master instructor. Six years ago after moving to their new location from Main Street, Bogdanski decided to add Duethorn to the business as a partner. Master Duethorn is a former school teacher and child development expert who has been affiliated with the school for over a decade. They have looked for a new school name that reflects their vision of teaching martial arts and then Quest was born. Quest Martial Arts is a school emphasizing the importance of a journey to become a Black Belt and to better self understanding using courage, self discipline, humility and indomitable spirit as a guide. See your instructor for details! Support Team USA as they travel to the birthplace of Tang Soo Do this summer. The United States Goodwill Tang Soo Do Association became a member of of the World Dang Soo Do Union (WDU). The WDU was was founded by Choeng Jae Nim Song Ki Kim (Dan #312), who currently resides in Song Tan, Korea. The WDU was created as organization in which member associations could keep their indepenence, yet interact and support the growth of traditional Dang (Tang) Soo Do worldwide. The World Dang Soo Do Union is not a Federation or and Association. As it's name implies it is a Union of Federations and Associations. Many people are already a part of great Federation or Association, but are looking for something bigger or even just looking for roots back to Korea. For many the WDU provides this. The WDU is headquartered at the historic SoungTan Moo Duk Kwan Dojang in Soungtan, Korea (now a part of Pyongtaek city). The Soungtan dojang was opened by Choeng Jae Nim in 1958 as is currently open today with head Master Kim, Yoon Ki. |
